Adult movies generally refer to movies of a pornographic nature, which will depict all manners of sexual encounters usually acted between a man and a woman (with variations on this). Because these are aimed specifically at adults and sectioned in such a way in the retail outlets that stock them, they are allowed to feature acts of hardcore pornography, with very little left to the imagination.

Each country has its own rules on pornographic movies, which means that the age upon which you can legally view content of this nature will vary across borders. Usually it varies between the age of 18 and 21.

The industry is so big that it has redefined the term ‘adult’. This term literally refers to a fully grown human who has fully matured. However, it is now defined by something you are legally allowed to view when you reach this stage in life. However, in this sense ‘adult’ does not just refer to movies, though this is a large part of the adult movies world. Cultural artefacts labelled as ‘adult’ can range from books to games, images and toys. Very often, there are also other forms of media that can be referred to as ‘adult’ that are not even part of the pornographic world, ranging from items that contain bad or inappropriate language, intense violence, the sight of blood, and the use of drugs. Sometimes films with content considered to be dark, scary and very intense can be labelled as ‘adult’.

That said, the term ‘adult movies’ generally refers to pornography. It is an industry with well known porn stars (of both genders), who perform sexual acts either with a story line or without, in front of a camera. The people involved will sometimes have features that have been enhanced through cosmetic surgery, including implants to the lips and breasts as well as facelifts, liposuction and tummy tucks. It means that their appearance relates to a particular image or look – one that is deemed ‘beautiful’ so that those viewing the pornographic content will find it more enjoyable to watch.

Adult movies bring in enormous revenue for the industry and the internet has only made just movies more favourable as it is now much easier to obtain pornographic movies discreetly.
